Biography

Carbon storage in lake sediments - Ferland (Dec 2011)

Interests:

Carbon bigeochemistry, lakes sedimentations patterns, short term and Holocene carbon storage, carbon regional stock in Quebec province, modelisation of sedimentological bathymetry, carbon budgets in lakes, paleohydrology, lake levels changes.

Research project:

The aim of my research project is the estimation of carbon burial in sediment of boreal and temperate lakes.

My thesis includes four main objectives:

  1.  Develop more robust estimates of carbon storage in lakes
  2.  Assess how carbon storage varies as a function of lakes properties, with different time-scales and in different biomes
  3. Place carbon storage in the context of the overall lake carbon budget
  4. Develop regional carbon storage models and use these models to determine robust estimates

In the context where environmental questions about carbon is more and more preoccupying, and where the carbon fluxes to the atmosphere are more and more known; the estimation of carbon burial in sediment still not well establish. In consequence, in my thesis, I propose a methodological and comparative study of 13 boreal lakes in Eastmain region. I explore the way to predict the recent and Holecene carbon burial with physical properties. With the developed method, 45 lakes in Quebec spread among Eastern Tonwships, Laurentians, James Bay lowlands and 14 Swedish lakes were echosounded and cored. With these data, carbon storage and accumulation rates estimates and sedimentological bathymetric models are explored.
