GRIL Student Committee Workshop 2011

The GRIL student committee has organised a workshop for students from November 4 to 6, 2011 at the SBL. This weekend will be a great opportunity to meet and share with other GRIL students and to gain new knowledge and skills in limnology. The mornings will be dedicated to student presentations on various limnological themes. In the afternoons, some of the themes presented will be applied in the field, in the lab and on the computer :

  • How to calibrate, use and recognize defects in a YSI probe (lab)
  • Sampling carbon and greenhouse gases (field)
  • Sampling, sorting and identification of zooplankton (field and lab)
  • Initiation in ArcGis (computers)
  • Introduction to programming and numeric ecology using the language R (computers - you can bring your own!)
  • Initiation in freshwater ichtyological inventory methods (field)
  • Use of stable isotopes in limnology (instruction, mass spectrophotometer operation, and resulting data)

CarBBAS at GLEON 13

Paul del Giorgio, Audrey Campeau, Dominic Vachon and Alice Parkes participated in the GLEON 13 conference at Lake Sunapee, NH, USA from October 10 to 14, 2011. This conference, organised by the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON), allowed about a hundred researchers from 24 countries to share their work on lakes and reservoirs. The members of GLEON, composed of limnologists, ecologists, engineers as well as IT experts, aim to build a worldwide network of lake observatories.
